Furnace Controls and Maintenance

Your furnace is an important part of what keeps your home running. It is crucial to know how to operate it and to be aware of the numerous ways to maintain your furnace.

Furnace maintenance and understanding its controls is important for operating it safely.

Depending on your particular furnace you’ll find:

  • The button on the left side controls the fan, and in auto position it will run on low
  • When you switch up the position, it will run the fan on low
  • It is recommended to use the ‘on’ position during cooling months
  • The button down below is pretty straightforward; it turns off cool and heating

To change the battery:

  • Remove the thermostat from the wall and you will see there are two AA batteries* inside.
  • Take the old batteries out, and make sure the polarity is correct on the new ones

Personalizing the Features on your Thermostat

Changing the Time

On your thermostat you’ll find a button that changes the time. By pushing it once you’ll see that it flashes with the hour.

  • When it starts to flash, use the arrow buttons to change the time ahead or behind
  • Press the “next” button to move on to minutes and use the arrows to change
  • After you have the correct time in place, the “next” button will allow you to move on to change the current day of the week
  • At any time during this process, you can press the “exit” button to return to the main menu

Changing Fahrenheit to Celsius

If you would like to change the temperature from farhenheit to celsius or vice versa, simply press the menu button and use the arrows to scroll down to settings.

  • When you see settings flashing, push the “next” button three times to switch from farhenheit to celsius
  • When your desired setting is in place, push the “exit” button to return to the main menu
  • The owner’s manual, entails all feature and and functions that the thermostat has

Your furnace should have a pocket that has all the owners manuals for your mechanical equipment.

How to change the filter on a high-efficiency furnace

  • Your furnace filter must be changed twice a year, again just before heating and just before cooling
  • To change the filter, remove the panel and set it aside
  • Keep in mind that the direction of the arrow must go towards the furnace
  • When you remove the old filter, throw it in your garbage
  • Take a new filter and again, install it with the arrow facing toward the furnace
  • Slide the new filter back in and gently push it all the way in
  • Put the door of the furnace back in place

Protocols to follow if your furnace is not working properly

  • Check your thermostat to make sure the batteries are full
  • Check that the switch next to your furnace is on
  • Check the breaker in your hydropanel to make sure that it is in the proper position
