Plumbing Systems and Water Supply
Types of Plumbing Systems
There are many different types of plumbing systems that helps your home operate daily.
It is important to be aware of each one and understand what their purpose is.
Backflow Preventer
This is a plumbing system that is designed to prevent sewage from backing up into your home. Sometimes a sewage ejector will be used in lieu of a backflow preventer.
Sump Pump
A sump pump, a plumbing system that is a sealed pit that pumps out drained water around your foundation to prevent flooding.
Recommended Care:
- It is suggested that each of these systems be inspected once a year to ensure proper operation
- If you are not comfortable doing this yourself, please contact a licensed plumber or technician
- You can do a plumbing cleanout for drainage in your home
- You must not restrict access to your cleanout as plumbing professionals may need to use this during service calls for possible blockage
Shutting off your municipal water supply
- The main shut off for your municipal water supply can be found in your mechanical room
- Each unit is a little different, so the key is to look for the metal lever with the coloured rubber handle; It will be parallel to the pipe when it is in the open position to turn off the water in the entire house
- Turn the lever ninety degrees so it is perpendicular to the pipe
- You have two hose bibs, one in the garage and one at the back
- The shut offs for these hose bibs can be found just above your water heater, and under your kitchen sink
- When the bell runs parallel to the pipe it is on, and when it is perpendicular to the pipe it is off
You must remove your hose from these hose bibs when temperatures are below freezing. If left on, the water in the hose will freeze and burst the internal valve causing possible flooding in your basement upon use of this faucet. If you need to access the drains in your bathroom for cleaning purposes simply unscrew the pop up drain.
